Eating Disorders and Disordered Eating

My mission is to help patients develop a normal, healthy relationship with food and their bodies.

How did you get interested in the field of nutrition?

In the late 70’s and early 80’s, I struggled with an eating disorder.  At that time, there was very little help for those with eating disorders.  Not much was known about the treatment of eating disorders.  After receiving many years of psychotherapy, I saw a registered dietitian who helped me learn how to eat “normally” again.  My visits with the dietitian inspired me to become a dietitian specializing in eating disorders.

Relevant history of employment

My first job as a dietitian was as the Nutrition and Exercise Coordinator – Texas Children’s Hospital Wellness Center, 1992 – 1998

How did you get interested in the field of nutrition?

I became interested in the field of nutrition during my junior year of high school. A local health educator was recruiting high school students to learn basic nutrition. After completing the local hospital’s nutrition curriculum, we were scheduled to present nutrition topics to elementary students around our community in a fun and interactive program.

Relevant history of employment

I was employed at Albany Medical Center Hospital in Albany, NY from September 2000 – September 2002, where I covered a variety of inpatient floors specific to Heart Transplant, CardioThoracic Surgery, Diabetes, Orthopedic Surgery, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and General Pediatric Medicine. After giving birth to my son in September of 2002, I began working at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, NY as a part of the Outpatient Diabetes Center, where my love for diabetes first developed. After the birth of my daughter in 2004, I also began consulting for Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY as their campus Registered Dietitian. At Vassar College, I counseled students on a variety of issues ranging from disordered eating, general weight loss, and sports nutrition. In 2010, my family moved from Upstate NY to Rural New Hampshire. In 2013, I began working at Elliot Hospital in Manchester, NH as part of the Advance Nutrition and Diabetes Center. Just recently, in September of 2013, my family has moved to Northern Houston.

Other interesting things about yourself:

When not caring for my husband and 2 children, I am usually in the midst of planning an exciting trip. This is my first time living in ‘the south’ and I’m slowly checking off significant cities I’ve always wanted to explore. I love to travel and am expected to visit family and friends back East quite often. This coming Fall (2014), my husband and I will be returning to West Point, NY to attend his 20th College Reunion at The United States Military Academy. I’m hoping I can bottle up some of the amazing cooler air and bring it back with me to Houston!

How long have you worked with The Healthy Weigh?

I have been working at The Healthy Weigh since the beginning of March 2018.

Where did you do your undergraduate and internship/graduate school?

I got my Bachelor’s of Science in Human Nutrition and Foods from the University of Houston, and graduated in December of 2017. I haven’t attended graduate school or completed an internship yet, but plan to do so in the future!

How did you get interested in the field of nutrition?

When I started college, I didn’t really know what I wanted to major in, but had an idea that it would be a health profession. A friend of mine recommended that I major in Nutritional Sciences, which would give me the prerequisites for a lot of different health career options, so I signed up for Introduction to Human Nutrition. By the end of the semester, I knew that I wanted to stay in the field of dietetics, so I changed my major!

Other interesting things about yourself:

I’m bilingual; I speak, read, and write English and Arabic (although my English is definitely better than my Arabic). I’m curious by nature, and I love to read about anything and everything.
